Level 1 Physical Education: Renegade Hockey Reflection

Today I would give myself  a 5/5 for effort and participation  in this training because... 

I was able to display an array of skill, dedication and confidence in this lesson. 

Skill(s) I worked on improving was/were: Control of the ball utilising the hockey stick

Today I helped: Hane, and vice-versa. We were able to teach each other and communicate efficiently and effectively which enhanced our listening skills and ability to direct.

Someone who helped me learn and how was: Hane. He was able to teach adequately well and explained everything to a degree where we could both understand what he was teaching.

 It was challenging to: Keep control of the ball.

Something I really enjoyed was: Creating new bonds and relationships with new fellows. This lesson was crucial to create these new bonds as they’ll prove a necessary in the near future in group activities.

Summary of the text (4 sentences)

WIth the Covid-19 Delta variant now in New Zealand, the country has been brought to a halt. A ‘lockdown’ has been set for the past 2 months for the whole of the North Island to protect the safety of everyone and prevent the spread of the virus. On 17 October, located in the North Shore region of Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland), a party was held with over 200 guests. Now the entire country is questioning, “What the everloving f*** were they thinking?”

On 17 October, a number of ‘influencers’ gathered in the North Shore region of Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) to attend a party. A party in fact that was arranged during the alert level 3 lockdown set due to the pandemic. Footage of this restriction-breaking get together was recently posted on social media. This event caused a stir in the country, and has brought forth harsh opinions, rumors, and annoyance. The country now questions, “What the everloving f*** were are they thinking?” Something I found most prominent whilst analyzing their behaviour is the phrase: “I have not much to lose.” This highlights how each of them reacted once notified of the party but were fully aware of the restrictions already in place. They chose otherwise and risked being infected with covid and potentially infecting more. This statement almost perfectly portrays their character. They display impulsiveness with little to no forethought, reflection, or consideration of the consequences. They’ve normalised this ideology within their friend group, which impairs their ability to differentiate right from wrong. In addition to that, this trait becomes more infectious and unhealthy the more we make careless decisions. Digging ourselves into a deep pit we’re no longer able to get out of. Plain carelessness. Although we all experience impulsivity on many accords, we must learn to overcome the instinct to make decisions motivated by fear, but rather by intuition. The contrast between the two is drastic and can have a major impact on our daily lives; as these folks need to understand. I too in the past have made impulsive decisions on many occasions and have tried to cover up my thoughtless behaviour. This behaviour was later accompanied by guilt, regret, self hatred and so on. As mentioned earlier, the contrast between the two is drastic and being able to balance these two very different ways of processing information, can give you the upper hand in various lines of thinking. Redirecting back to the incident, if I was to place myself in the shoes of one of these individuals, I sense I would blindly retrace their steps and make the same mistake. The temptation would get the better of me and would cost me my social status, reputation and possibly life. Yet another trap I would fall victim to. 

Something the text made me think about/realise/appreciate/rethink my understanding of etc…

This article made me realise, “It is what it is.” There’s no way to alter the past. There’s also no point in dwelling on it. In comparison to a book, you cannot read a chapter twice and expect two different endings. It’s always going to end the same. People perceive everything differently, and at the end of the day, it’s their choice which side they choose to support. It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day and a new chapter. The power of “It is what it is.”

Future planning is creating a guideline for a person with an intellectual or developmental purpose to lead a good life/your desired life as an individual independently. We, in 10R have been extensively researching and creating our ideal future using careful and thorough planning. With this information, we hope to carry these plans out and make them a reality. 

My understanding of a career is an occupation or profession undertaken for a significant period of a person's life with the intentions of acquiring knowledge, money, connections, relationships etc. Your desired career can sprout from inspiration or motivation to want something of interest to you. 

An enterprise is defined as a project or undertaking, especially a bold or complex one. In other words, a business or company. It is a term used in the commercial world used to describe a project undertaken in the hope for gain. Gain for wealth, gain for knowledge, gain for communication and so on. An example that accentuates this, is a new start-up business. Entrepreneurs are individuals or groups of individuals that build/have built the courage, initiative, skill set and knowledge necessary to carry out these massive projects. Although they are fully aware of the risks that come with creating a business, the “give back” is just too high to back out. “It’s not about the ideas, it’s about making those ideas the reality.” 

An entrepreneur is a person who sets up a business/businesses, taking on the financial risk in the hope of profit. They devise a plan to reap the rewards, also bearing the burden of the risk factor accompanying it. They form unique ideas which evolve into an operation which will hopefully bring financial benefit to themselves. These individuals are very 'get-go’, and will find the simplest route to the rewards with minimal risk. This requires a high level of thinking, observation, communication, connecting, intellectually and developmentally. But it’s not as easy as it seems. Entrepreneurship comes with hard work, dedication, consistency and overall attitude to learn and fail. “Failure is the key to success.”

Each of these key concepts correlate to each other but also aid us in the decision of what we’d like to do as we progress through life. An obstacle I identified while venturing through the journey of a topic was finding what I really wanted to do. It is a hard decision to choose something you’d want to be comfortable doing for the next twenty to thirty, even forty years from now. This opened my eyes and made me realize the enormous and vast amount of options our generation has. We have been left with the task to keep humanity going, and most of us now are just realising that. But this is not definite. “A goal without a plan is just a mere wish.” 

Planning someone's future, such as my own, was foreign to me but I slowly adapted and made a rhythm. I feel this rhythm allowed me to gain deeper understanding and inspired me to take action about it. To be able to study the future career you want to see yourself in was fascinating but also daunting. 

This topic of Social Studies really made me realise how fast life moves and that in a couple of years, I will be in the same position as my parents. Providing for your family, yourself, paying bills, paying for your own food etc. This really made me think hard and realise, I don’t want to be in the same position my parents are in. I don't want to have to pull out every cent to pay the rent. I don't want to have to worry about the expenses. I want to do the most whilst I'm young and dumb, so I can learn from it and not make those childish mistakes when I'm older. “Do the hard work in the beginning, and enjoy the end sufficiently.”

Although violence can bring momentary fulfilment for a limited goal, it is never a long term solution to resolve conflict. Violence can reduce ones ability to retaliate, yet we are all inclined to hold feelings of spite. Thus, violence may seem beneficial in the short run, but it offers no optimal long term solution to dispute.

Karate Kid Film Studies | English

 The Karate Kid follows Daniel LaRusso, a teenager taught by Mr Miyagi to help defend against himself and compete in a tournament against his school bullies, one of which is his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. Daniel and his mother Lucilla moved to Southern California to start fresh, but soon found himself the target of a group of bullies which unfortunately studied the art of karate. They tormented him every time they saw him utilizing their special skill of karate to accomplish these actions. Daniel became infuriated and was determined and compassionate to learn karate and out-do every one of them. He soon met Mr Miyagi early on in the film and discovered Mr Miyagi is a master of the arts. Mr Miyagi accepted Daniel as a student and taught him what there is to know about karate. “Balance is key.”

My favourite character in the film is Johnny. My reasoning behind my decision is because without Johnny or his crew, this film would have ended completely differently. Without a problem, there’s not a solution. WIthout Johnny, there wouldn’t be Mr Miyagi to teach Daniel karate. Johnny is a key character in the film and I like him for that.

An event that surprised me in the film was when Mr Miyagi gifted one of his precious cars to Daniel. In a scene where they both met and became friends, Mr Miyagi tells Daniel to drive because he can’t. They both giggle and carry on. This is an iconic scene I wouldn’t forget in the film for this reason. Although they both couldn’t drive, now Daniel has his licence and that was Mr Miyagi’s gift to Daniel as a birthday present. It really highlights the evolution of their relationship as student and sensei/father and son/best friends. It warmed my heart when I first witnessed the scene.

I would recommend this text to other teenagers because it allows us to develop and build our analyzation and descriptive skills. This task we’ve been assigned with really challenged me mentally, but it allowed me to come to the realisation I need to push harder and carry on I would challenge other teenagers to read/watch the film or book and analyse it with descriptive detail. On top of analysing the film, we studied and understood the types of shots utilised in the film and its purpose. We used our vast new knowledge of camera shots to add more detail and description about the film. The characters, setting, camera shot, facial expressions and so on. Local Government? What is it? | Social Studies

Local government is a term used to label the lowest tier of public administration within small regions and communities. Local government in New Zealand consists of in total, 78 local and regional councils, 11 regional councils and 61 territorial authorities (11 are city councils and 50 are district councils). The purpose of local government is to provide an organised system where councils exercise their power and responsibilities to collaborate for peace, order and good governance of their communities or districts. The brief statement that was previously announced, was a sneak peek into the learning we've been doing in class. Government is an important unit to speak on and learn about at a young age. This enables me and other young people to be aware of the change within our community. This learning will later benefit us wanting to make a change in our community or country.

The Outsiders Review | English

 The book, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton tells the story of a 14-year-old-boy, Ponyboy Curtis and his struggles of right and wrong in a society which believes he is an outsider. Ponyboy and his two older brothers - Darrel (Darry), who is 20, and Sodapop, who is 16, live together without their parents who were killed in an automobile accident. According to Ponyboy, there are two types of people: Socs and Greasers. A rivalry between two gangs based in Oklahoma, USA. Overall the book is very captivating and engaging. The vocabulary and language techniques the author applies into this book add depth and profundity to the storyline as well as the characters and their backstories.

Scientific Method

The scientific method is series of steps which is used to acquire knowledge about the world around us. It consists of seven steps which are all followed in the correct order to answer a question you're curious about. The beginning of the method starts with a heading. The heading is used to identify your project and what you're trying to answer or prove. Next is to find an aim. The aim is another term for question/what you want to know or prove. Next is to create a hypothesis. A hypothesis is an educated guess based on information you've researched and gathered related to your aim. Using this hypothesis, you're going to experiment and prove if your guess is correct or incorrect. Next is to chart or record your results. Now using your results and observations of the project so far, you're going to make a conclusion which records your observations, opinion and more about the project.  

9R Wellington Educational Trip

Throughout the middle of the year, 9R all agreed to visit Wellington. One or two terms have past on from that point and we've been preparing for the trip. We all planned to stay in Wellington for three days and two nights which gave us time to visit places that coincidentally tied to our Globalisation topic and others we've been studying this year. I don't know if this was coincidental or planned, but we were constantly reminded by the teacher aids and the teacher that we'll be able to ask questions that we've been researching when we visit. Three weekly meetings later and our time had come. On the 16th of November Monday, students and teachers which consisted of Whaea Hinemoa, Whaea Shannon, Whaea Dell, Whaea Waimarie and Whaea Annette were among those who planned and supervised us throughout our stay in Wellington. We left school at 6:00am sharp reaching to Auckland hours later. We then flew to Wellington and caught a bus to the National Library. We were given an educational tour of specific areas of the building such as where important national documents were held, a whole area dedicated to the documents which provided us with backstory and technology which helped us to gain a deeper understanding, and the basement where tonnes and tonnes of books, dairies, manuscripts and unpublished work were kept in storage. The documents consisted of the Treaty of Waitangi, the Women Suffrage Rights and New Zealand's Deceleration of Independence. After the educational tour, we booked into our accommodation at YHA. On Tuesday we visited the Parliament Buildings where we were gladly met by a Northland MP, Willow Jean Prime. She gave us a warm welcome and a brief introduction of the building before we were escorted into a classroom were we were given another introduction of areas within the building and roles of certain members. After Parliament, we headed to Te Papa which was close to our accommodation, thankfully. There, we were given a small tour of a specific area within the vicinity before being able to head off and explore the museum ourselves. On Wednesday/the last day of being in Wellington, we headed to a place called Bowlerama for the morning which was filled with action packed activities and obviously bowling. We had until 2:00pm to head back to the Airport and home. We headed back home at 2:00pm and arrived at school at around 7:30pm which we were then picked up by our parents and taken home. I personally enjoyed the experience and got a lot from it. Being able to access places that a normal tourist or visitor wouldn't be able to was such an experience. And I'm very thankful for the teachers who planned and came along on the trip. We're very thankful and blessed to have these teachers who have done this all for us. Thank you!

NZ 2020 Generel Elections Poster

We were recently tasked to create a poster about our thoughts about the results of the NZ 2020 General Elections. We've decided to present our thoughts in the form of a poster. Here is the poster I've created. Enjoy!

Last week Friday in period five, 9R went through two streets in Kawakawa to support the Keep New Zealand Beautiful cause. We scavenged through Leonard Street and Whitemans Road searching for rubbish. Throughout the whole period, we searched for rubbish supporting the cause. I overall enjoyed the experience and felt myself gaining a sense of being a kaitiaki of our environment around us. I hope to see more of these acts around in areas.

Kiwi Culture New Zealand Icons

This poster consists of 6 New Zealand Icons that are well known throughout the country. In our Social Studies class, we are studying about Kiwi Culture and this poster shows icons that relate to kiwi culture. So far, this is a good experience and I'm learning many things about our culture as a whole and what makes us us.

Push + Pull Posters

In Social Studies, we have been creating and sharing to each other push + pull posters about the topic entering and leaving a country. The push and pull aspect of these posters were to find reasons with explanation to wanting to move to a country and vice-versa. We then had to present both posters to our class and state the reasons why for both topics. This was a good exercise for public speaking in my opinion and to advertise something.Here are the two posters which we created and shared with everyone. 

About Me

Kia ora, my name is Izaiah and I’m a year 9 student that attends Bay of Islands College. I am in one of the two mainstream houses named Rata. I am part Maori and part Samoan. As far as my learning goes, it’s pretty exciting. I really enjoy learning new things throughout every subject of learning. Since it’s only the beginning of the year, I’m just relearning or recapping on things about last year. This year I’m looking forward to achieving goals that I’ve set for myself. I’m really excited to dig deeper into my learning and become the best I can be.

School Gala Day

Today at Bay of Islands College, we are having a whole community Gala Day. There are many stalls and activities for all ages to participate in as well as school students performing their talents on stage for everyone to see. So far, I've enjoyed my time in this Gala Day. I enjoyed playing all the activities this morning and shooting hoops in the gym. My overall opinion on this Gala Day is that it's one of the most entertaining Gala Days I've been to. I've enjoyed seeing people from around the community come to BOIC and spend time with each other.

Action World Trip

On Monday the senior syndicate attended Action World for the morning. The instructor did a small breifing explaining the rules about Action World. After that we were able to play freely doing any activity we wanted. My friend and I went to The Jousting game. I dominated the game during the start but was forced to get off to let others have a turn. That was the only activity I really did because I got the most pleasure out of it. Overall I enjoyed the trip as well as seeing kids have fun and collaborating together to accomplish what they were doing.
