Kapa Haka Rakau
Yesterday the kapa haka boys started to work on our rakau that we’re going to use for the festival in Kaikohe. We stripped the bark off the timber which revealed a nice white grainy piece of timber. We then had to sand down the rakau making it smooth and easy to work with, gradually changing the type of sandpaper. Lastly we had to coat our rakau with a wood grain stain to give the rakau a good finish. Today I have to coat my rakau one more time and then I’m finished. I enjoyed using the power tools to turn something that’s a little ugly and rough to the touch, to something that’s and and smooth.
